This 4-week course introduces you to the exciting career of Food Styling. It provides an overview, background, and helpful suggestions for beginning your career as a food stylist. The instructor is recognized food stylist, Lisa Golden Schroeder.
Description
You've heard about food styling: making food look beautiful for photos in magazines, cookbooks, and advertising. And you know you like to work with food and think it sounds like a great career option. What does it really take to learn the art and craft of food styling? How do you break into the business? Is this a skill you'd like to add to your culinary business?
Learn the essentials of what food styling is all about in Food Styling 101. Veteran food stylist Lisa Golden Schroeder will guide you through an insider¹s view of developing a successful styling business. Learn about the job responsibilities, building a tool kit, and creating your own portfolio of work. Find out if this is the career for you!
Each week you'll receive assignments that will deepen your knowledge of this fun, but challenging career. By the end of the class you¹ll create a collection of your own styled food photographs that will be critiqued by the instructor.
Course concludes with an optional group conference call giving you an opportunity to communicate with fellow students and instructor.
How the Course Works
Food Styling 101 is completely online and we have had students from all over the world taking the class together.
There is no specific schedule for the class. You can read and study the lessons at your own pace, on your own schedule. Sometime during that week you can complete your assignments and upload them to the class Gallery, which is a site open only to online students and the instructor.
Every Tuesday during the session the instructor emails you a PDF of that week's lesson. It is filled with images and lots of information about Food Styling. You can print it out or read it online. You will also receive extra articles about essential aspect of the profession of food styling.
Weekly assignments are uploaded to our Gallery where you can post your images and commentary. The instructor reviews each student's album of images and adds commentary - and students can view the other students' work and instructor commentary. Working at your own pace, you'll benefit as much as you want from the class.
Suggested Materials
This online course is designed to help you learn about food styling and if it's the right career choice for you. No expensive materials need to be purchased. The following supplies are needed for this class.
∙ Computer and internet access;
∙ Scanner or digital camera is suggested, but you can use a traditional point-and-shoot film camera and have a CD created when your film is developed;
∙ Access to a good bookstore that carries a wide variety of publications or the public library;
∙ Basic cooking equipment and good knives. A short list of additional tools/equipment will be provided in the first lesson. Food styling does not require a vast number of special tools.
